Are Impact-Resistant (Class 4) Shingles Worth It in Fort Collins?

In a hail-prone area like the Front Range, impact-resistant shingles are often worth considering when a roof is being replaced. They cost more than standard shingles but are made to take hail better. Ask your insurer whether they change your premium.

What does Class 4 mean?

Impact-resistant shingles are often tested to the UL 2218 standard, which drops steel balls of increasing size onto the shingle. Class 4 is the highest rating.

Will they stop all hail damage?

No shingle is hail-proof. Very large hail can still damage them, but they are designed to resist more than standard shingles.

Do they cost more?

Yes. How much more depends on the brand and the roof. A roofer can quote both standard and impact-resistant options.

What about insurance?

Some insurers offer a discount for impact-resistant roofs. Policies vary, so ask yours before choosing.

Are there other options?

Metal and stone-coated steel roofs are also used in hail country. Each has pros and cons for cost, noise and appearance.

What should I do?

If you're replacing your roof, ask for quotes on more than one material. See roof replacement.

How do they look?

Many impact-resistant shingles look much like standard architectural shingles, so they suit most homes and HOA rules. Ask to see samples in daylight before choosing a colour.

Do they need special installation?

They should be installed to the maker's instructions, with the right underlayment and nailing, or the warranty and rating may not apply. Choose a roofer who has installed the product before and ask for the manufacturer's paperwork when the job is done.

When does the upgrade make most sense?

When you are replacing the whole roof anyway, especially after a hail claim. Adding them as part of a planned replacement costs less than paying for a second roof after the next big storm.
