Roofing in Severance, CO

Severance at a glance

Severance is a town in Weld County on the plains northwest of Greeley. Its population was 7,683 at the 2020 census, up more than 140% from 2010. A post office has operated here since 1894.

What that means for your roof

With most homes built in the last fifteen years, many Severance roofs are on their first set of shingles. Builder-grade shingles can be more easily damaged by hail than impact-resistant ones. If you are replacing after a storm, read whether Class 4 shingles are worth it.

Wind and open ground

New subdivisions on open farmland have few mature trees to break the wind. Shingles along rakes and ridges take the brunt. After a windy spell, look for shingles in the yard or tabs that look lifted, and ask a roofer to check. See roof repair.

Tailholt, sugar beets and the trail

The town is named for David Severance, a pioneer settler. It first applied for a post office under the name Tailholt, but the name was changed to Severance when he applied in 1894. In the early 1900s, Severance campaigned for local farmers to grow sugar beets so a sugar factory could be built in neighbouring Windsor; it worked, and the Great Western Sugar Company was created in 1905. Today the Great Western Trail runs through the middle of town along the old railway line. Bruce's Bar in Severance is widely known for serving Rocky Mountain oysters. For new homeowners, the key roof job is simple: check it after every hail storm.
