Roofing in Laporte, CO

Laporte at a glance

Laporte is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Larimer County, with 2,409 people at the 2020 census and ZIP code 80535. It lies on the Cache la Poudre River northwest of Fort Collins, close to where the river leaves the foothills, with U.S. 287 along its northern edge.

What that means for your roof

Laporte has older homes, acreages and outbuildings. Barns and shops with metal roofs need their own care: loose fasteners, worn washers and rust at seams cause leaks. Houses near trees collect needles and leaves in valleys and gutters. See gutters and roof repair.

Wind out of the foothills

Homes near the canyon mouth get strong winds funnelled out of the mountains. Check for lifted shingles and loose flashing after windy days, and keep trees trimmed back from the roof.

Larimer County's first settlement

French-Canadian fur trappers built cabins along the Cache la Poudre River here as early as 1828, making Laporte the first settlement in Larimer County. Legend says traders stashed supplies, including gunpowder, in a cache by the river, giving the river its name. Antoine Janis made his home here in 1844 and is often called the first permanent settler north of the Arkansas River. Camp Collins, the army post that came before Fort Collins, stood near Laporte until a flood destroyed it in June 1864. Homes here have weathered mountain wind and river weather for a long time; an inspection every few years catches small roof problems before they turn into leaks.
